Securing Your Computer And Network Using A Firewall

0

Securing your computer and home network is one of the most important things you can do because it protects your data. Your data is not just your pictures you took on your vacation or your MP3 files you download from iTunes it’s your social security number, driver’s license number and financial information. Just because your bank grantees there site is secure to use does not mean your data is safe your computer can be the cause of your data getting stolen.

Everyone should be behind a firewall whenever you are surfing the web or doing any kind of online shopping to help protect your Credit Card information or online banking to protect your account information.

What is a firewall? A firewall is a software program or piece of hardware that helps screen out hackers, viruses, and worms that try to reach your computer over the Internet. Firewalls act as a barrier between a trusted network and other untrusted networks such as the Internet or less-trusted networks such as a retail merchant’s network outside of a cardholders data environments.

Most Microsoft Windows computers come with the windows firewall on by default but some computers like Mac OSX do not come with the firewall on and you must turn them on in the security area of system preferences. Even Macs can be attacked as Apple has gain more market share they have become a target along with Microsoft for security issue so you should turn your Mac firewall on as soon as possible to prevent any issues.

The standard firewall that is available from Microsoft will give you some protection but I strongly recommend a third party firewall. Most paid antivirus manufacturers come with firewalls  AVG and Avast both have free antivirus but there paid versions include a firewall. I strongly recommend this option for 50 to 60 dollars a year you are protecting not only your computer but your data.

If you have more than one computer now days which mostly everyone does you are probably using a router the common brands are Linksys, Netgear and Belkin. There are lots of brands these 3 just being the most common I run into on a weekly basis. Some of these devices come with what they call an endpoint firewall what that means is when the information comes in over the internet the router makes sure it’s safe before it passes to your computer, tablet or cell phone. I strongly recommend you enable this feature this is not on by default you must either read the instructions or call technical support. But not to worry if you just bought the device routers usually come with 1 year free technical support so you will not be charged for tech supports assistance.

Installing a software firewall like AVG or Avast on your computer can protect your computer or installing a router with a firewall can keep you safe by monitoring traffic coming in and out of your home or business network. I strongly recommend having both for maximum protection against threats and attackers to keep your computer and identity safe while connected online.
