The 18th Annual Community Reading Day will take place this year on Thursday, April 24th in second grade classrooms throughout WayneCounty. This program is unique in that all across Wayne County, Pennsylvania at 9:15 a.m., students will be read to by individuals from our local businesses and organizations who hope to spark the imagination and desire to become a life-long reader in our youth. Many of the volunteers have been committed to the program for numerous years not only because of the value for the children, but because it is an enjoyable and rewarding experience for them.
Community Reading Day is sponsored regionally by the Greater Pittston Chamber of Commerce, Greater Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, Greater Wilkes-Barre
Chamber of Commerce, Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce, South Valley Chamber of Commerce, Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, Southern Wayne Regional Chamber of Commerce and Pocono Lake Region Chamber of Commerce.
Boyds Mill Press, the trade division of Highlights for Children, Inc., will supply the books for all the volunteer readers. This year’s selections are “The Great Big Green” by Peggy Gifford and “Big Pigs” by Leslie Helakoski, were chosen based on reading level and age appropriateness.
