Stroudsburg, PA – Crossing Abilities, a community-led project to build a playground in Monroe County for children and parents of all abilities, is pleased to announce that it has joined Pocono Alliance. Pocono Alliance is a 501(c)3 charitable organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life in Monroe County by identifying unmet human services needs and working toward solutions.
There are more than 5,000 children in Monroe County with disabilities, and yet the county has no all-inclusive playground in the area. Although some playgrounds say they are all-accessible, the closest playground, that meets the definition of ALL-INCLUSIVE is 40+ miles away.
Last year, starting under the Monroe County Challenger program, Crossing Abilities was awarded a $25,000 grant by the Pocono Mountains Community Fundraiser to fund a planning study for the playground. Since then, the group has been reaching out to form alliances with groups and agencies in the area to plan the playground. Last month, the playground’s site was selected: the new Hamilton-Jackson-Pocono (HJP) Regional Park being developed in the Bartonsville area.
“Pocono Alliance is honored to support the efforts of Crossing Abilities,” said Michael Tukeva, Executive Director of Pocono Alliance. “The organization is excited to grow this project into a reality for all Monroe County children, regardless of ability level.”
“We believe partnering with Pocono Alliance will give Crossing Abilities a springboard to the entire community,” said Neal Gallagher, project manager of Crossing Abilities. “We are in alignment with the Pocono Alliance’s Health Coalition’s missions and values. We know that children are differently-abled. We see that adding a universally-inclusive playground for children of all abilities is a win-win-win proposal.”
