On Thursday, February 12th, Rachael Arnone of “bachestinks” will be teaching “DIY: Upcycled Tee Shirt Tote Bags” the first installment in a new a “Do-it-Yourself” workshop series presented by The Cooperage Project. This “DIY” class will run from 7:00 to 9:00pm at The Cooperage, located at 1030 Main Street in Honesdale, PA.
Everyone has a few tee shirts taking up space in their closet. Why not put them to good use?
The workshop will focus on transforming a tee shirt into a tote bag. Arnone will guide participants through the steps needed to create the bag. Not a seasoned sewer? Don’t worry, no sewing experience is necessary to attend this class.
In addition to making a bag or two, plan to learn about the art of sewing and how to improve your skills. Arnone will talk briefly about sewing basics and share a few “tricks of the trade” that she uses daily in her business.
Arnone is a self taught seamstress born and raised in Honesdale, PA. Arnone sews under the name “bachestinks” and specializes in kitchenware & accessories that are handcrafted from vintage, recycled and found materials. You may have seen her and her aprons at various craft shows, farmers’ markets, or even The Cooperage Project’s Holiday Artisans’ Market.
Upcycling, or the process of taking old materials and transforming them into something new, is something that Arnone takes seriously. “Upcycling allows us to change the ways of our disposable society by taking tips from our grandparents and continuing to give something new life until it is threadbare.” says Arnone.
“Until it finally lives it’s last breaths as a strip of rag used to tie up the tomato plants,” jokes Arnone.
Arnone suggests that each participant bring two or three tee shirts to the class. Small and medium tee shirts will make a good size grocery bag while large and extra large tee shirts will make a good size laundry bag. And guess what? There will be a prize for the coolest tee shirt!
Come see for yourself. Suggested donation: $10 per class. Sewing machines will be provided. Don’t forget your shirts! The Cooperage is operated by the The Cooperage Project, is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization that seeks to build community through performance, learning and good times.
