Swiftwater, PA – The Northeastern Pennsylvania Alliance today announced the designation of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Alliance Metropolitan Planning Organization (NEPA MPO) at an event held in Swiftwater, PA.
The Northeastern Pennsylvania Alliance previously operated as the Rural Planning Organization (RPO), providing transportation planning and programming services for Carbon, Monroe, Pike, Schuylkill and Wayne Counties. Following the 2010 Census, an urbanized area of over 50,000 was identified in Monroe County, and as required by federal law, all urbanized areas must be represented by a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), prompting the change from an RPO to an MPO. Four of the RPO counties (Carbon, Monroe, Pike and Schuylkill) have elected to continue the regional transportation program collaboration under the designation of the NEPA MPO.
Several elected officials from the four counties attended the event including Monroe County Commissioners John Moyer, Charles Garris and Suzanne McCool, Pike County Commissioner Matthew Osterberg and Schuylkill County Commissioners George Halcovage, Jr. and Gary Hess. State Representative Rosemary Brown was also in attendance. The event was also attended by representatives from PennDOT District 4-0 and 5-0.
The NEPA Alliance convenes an MPO committee to review the four-county regional Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) which is the primary funding source for the counties’ highway and bridge projects, transit system improvements and other transportation programs. The NEPA MPO 2013-2016 TIP totals over $523 million over four years. The NEPA Alliance is also developing a Long Range Transportation Plan, conducting a Local Asset Inventory of local bridges and roads, assisting with the Safe 80 Task Force and administering the Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) to provide training to local officials and municipal road crews.
The NEPA Alliance is a 501 (c) 4 organization that serves a seven-county region of northeastern Pennsylvania. The NEPA Alliance provides numerous community and economic development programs such as Business Financing, International Business Development, Government Contracting Assistance, Nonprofit Assistance, Transportation Planning, Research and Data Services and Local Government Services.
