Dallas, PA – The Luzerne County Bar Association Charitable Foundation recently presented a $1,000 check to the Misericordia University Women with Children (WWC) Program.
WWC was established in 2000 to provide support to women and their children by helping them realize their full potential through higher education. The program provides support, services, housing and financial aid for academically qualified single mothers of any age who are determined to complete their undergraduate degree.
The program has grown steadily from a pilot project to a successful educational model. WWC can support as many as 10 students and up to 20 children in two houses on Lake Street, Dallas. Funding is primarily derived through grants from private foundations, corporations, government agencies and contributions from civic groups and individuals.
“Inquiries far outnumber the available openings in the program,” said Vicki L. Austin, director of the program. “I typically send out two to three informational packets, including a brochure and application, each week and we have only 10 slots available.”
Among those who participated in the check presentation were Emily Bittner, a first-year nursing major, and her daughter Madelyn, 3, who are participants in the WWC program.
