Tannersville, PA – The United Way of Monroe County is seeking volunteers and worthy service projects as it gears up for its 14th annual Day of Caring on Friday, Sept.23.
Day of Caring brings together employee groups and other volunteers to complete much-needed maintenance and improvement projects for nonprofit agencies throughout the community. It has traditionally been one of the largest one-day volunteer efforts in Monroe County. While many participants return every year, new volunteers are always needed.
The deadline for submitting a project has been extended until Friday, Aug. 12. Volunteers need to sign up by the end of this month.
Nonprofit organizations such as churches, health/human service agencies and municipal/civic groups are welcome to submit projects for consideration. Day of Caring helps these organizations complete tasks that might not otherwise be completed due to lack of volunteers, money and supplies.
Volunteers can specify what kind of projects they want to help with and sign up for a full or half day. Tasks range from cleaning, landscaping, minor construction and painting to delivering meals, working with children or doing clerical work. Youngsters, adults and seniors are all welcome to participate, and a T-shirt and lunch are provided. Large and small businesses, organizations, and individuals get involved each year.
The event also features a thank you picnic, which is being held at Barley Creek Brewing Company in Tannersville and co-sponsored by Barley Creek and Desaki restaurant. All volunteers and participating nonprofit agencies/groups will be treated to food and music.
“Day of Caring is a great way to give back to the community and energizes everyone involved,” said Mathilda Sheptak, executive director of the United Way of Monroe County. “It provides an opportunity for people to connect with each other and the agencies that are so vital to the well-being of our county’s residents. We are very thankful for the volunteers, businesses and groups that give of their time and energy.”

Day of Caring 2010 brought together more than 200 volunteers from 26 area businesses, organizations and service clubs. They contributed 1,306 hours of service – valued at roughly $27,230. A total of 42 projects were completed for 19 nonprofits throughout Monroe County.
Companies/institutions that have been involved include Cramer’s Home Centers, Sanofi Pasteur, Wal-Mart Distribution Center #6080, Patterson-Kelley, Weiler Corporation, East Stroudsburg University, Access Office Technologies, ESSA Bank & Trust, Target (T-1260), Northampton Community College, Pocono Record, and the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau.
The United Way of Monroe County provides health and human services through community initiatives and funding to more than 30 local programs.
