November Exhibits at The Poconoarts Cultural Center

Stroudsburg, PA – The Pocono Arts Council invites the community to the PoconoArts Cultural Center to view the work or its talented visual artists, fine craftsmen and local poets during the month of November.

In the ARTSPACE Gallery, the featured Artist is Sharon Cosgrove.  Sharon has been an associate professor of art at Wilkes University since 1990.  During that time she has participated in many shows throughout the northeast and won numerous awards.  She has travelled and studied extensively throughout Italy, France and Spain and much of her work highlights the beauty of these regions.  Edward J. Sozanski reviewed Sharon’s work for The Philadelphia Inquirer on July 15, 2005 with the following:  “For pure star quality, Bowar [Cosgrove] is hard to top, especially when she paraphrases one of history’s greatest painters, Diego Velazquez. Cosgrove’s version of the iconic painting Las Meninas is a tour de force – an homage and masterly transcription of a 17th century subject into contemporary language.”  Sharon will be joined by 22 ARTSPACE member artists.

The Hall of Poetry & Writing features the work of Urban Mountain Voices – a spoken word group under the direction of Tricia McGarvin-Fernadez.  Urban Mountain Voices is an after school program serving teens, 13 – 19 years old, throughout Monroe County.  According to Ms. McGarvin-Fernandez, “the poems on exhibit were written for the purpose of being performed on stage by the poet.  UMV elected to keep these poems in draft form allowing readers to have a glimpse into the process of a young poet while showing respect for the process and the diverse approaches to writing.  All poems are written in the students own voice, using their own vernacular, and expressing their own point of view.  It is as though they are allowing you to peak into their private journals.”

Finally, the newly opened PoconoArts Gallery Shop has something for everyone and is an excellent place to shop for that one of a kind gift for yourself or someone else.  New artists and items are being added all the time.  Please stop by frequently to see “what’s new.”

An opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, November 6, 1-4 PM.  Regular hours are 10am-4pm Monday – Friday and Noon-4PM on Saturday and Sunday.  For further information call 570-476-4460 or visit www.poconoarts.org.
