For 37 years, Turano Insurance has provided quality insurance assistance to local residents and businesses. Recently, they’ve added a new service. In addition to insuring personal claims, automobiles and commercial endeavors, Turano Insurance is dedicated to insuring the health of our planet. This local insurance agency is a participant in the new program, Wayne Businesses Conserve! As a participant, they are sharing with out community how energy conservation has helped their business.
“Realistically, energy conservation is a way to save some money,” says Lucas Turano, “It has a noticeable impact on our businesses bottom line.” Weatherizing doors and windows, increasing the insulation of their building, setting their heating/cooling system back each night, installing efficient LED bulbs in exit signs… these are just a handful of the conservation practices Turano Insurance has implemented. And without a doubt, all of them help the business decrease their monthly electricity bill.
While their main interest might be financial savings, Turano insurance recognizes that energy conservation has a host of other benefits including decreasing the production of greenhouse gases, investing in the future of the Earth and simply becoming more aware of the enormous amount of energy we use on a daily basis.
“Take paper for example,” says Luke. “Even though we operate a paperless system, we generate a ton of waste. And because of the sensitive information it might contain, we can’t just take this paper to the recycling center. It has to be dealt with in a secure manner.” The business is currently looking into paper shredding companies that recycle 100% of their wastes.
In order to offset their remaining energy needs, Turano Insurance installed 44 solar panels on their downtown rooftop in March 2010. Since the installation, the panels have produced a total of 4.8 Megawatt Hours of electricity… enough to power nearly 5,000 computers for 24 hours. On most days, Turano Insurance is offsetting all of their electricity use and their electric meter actually spins backwards! “It’s so simple,” says Turano, “we just sit here! We save energy and produce our own electricity. When we combine that with other energy saving practices…well, we’re doing all right!” Turano estimates that within 4 years, the solar PV system will have paid for itself, which means on most days, Turano Insurance will be a local energy producer instead of purchaser. Photos of the system and real-time output data can be found on their website, www.turanoinsurance.com.
Wayne Businesses Conserve! is a pilot program sponsored by SEEDS, Workforce Wayne and PPL Electric Utilities.
